As one of the first television station groups to broadcast
programs digitally, LIN TV stands at the forefront of the industry’s technological revolution. Explore this site to learn more about digital television and LIN TV’s plans for this landmark technology.

Transforming the Television Viewing Experience

Digital Television (DTV) enables broadcasters to deliver news, sports and entertainment with movie-quality picture and sound. It also unleashes the potential for Multicasting, which is broadcasting multiple programming choices simultaneously, and Interactive TV. LIN TV is presently developing a robust suite of digital products that will increase its local television stations’ programming and sales offerings.

With DTV, images and sounds are transmitted using "data bits", the same code that computers use, enabling a digital broadcaster to deliver more information than what is possible with analog broadcast technology. High-Definition Digital TV (HDTV) broadcasts wide-screen images with twice the resolution of analog television, allowing for stunning picture detail and immaculate sound.

Under legislation passed by Congress, on February 17, 2009, all television stations are required to turn off their analog channels and continue broadcasting exclusively in the digital format. To learn more about the switch to DTV, please visit http://www.dtvanswers.com/.

Multicasting

In addition to drastically improving the quality of television, the advent of DTV also provides viewers with more choice in watching the programs they want to see, when they want to see them.

LIN TV’s stations have many more hours of award-winning programming and services that are not seen by consumers because of time constraints. Multicasting will soon make it possible for local stations to broadcast several programs simultaneously in standard-definition (SDTV), and to incorporate more of the local content that is so important to viewers in its communities.

For both viewers and advertisers, Multicasting translates into bolder offerings from broadcast television and a robust alternative to cable and satellite.

Interactive TV

Digital TV not only offers viewers more choice, it makes the viewing experience substantially more interactive.

Interactive TV is the convergence of television and computers -- allowing the real-time exchange of information between the sender and the receiver. For many viewers, this paves the way for the ultimate television experience.

LIN TV is harnessing the power of new technologies to pioneer new products and services and create further opportunities for innovation and growth.
